Have you ever wondered what it feels like to see yourself through a lens that celebrates you? Boudoir photography is more than just pictures - it’s a journey of self-love, confidence, and pure joy! If you’re curious about this beautiful art form and how it’s blossoming right here in New Zealand, you’re in the right place. Let’s dive into the world of boudoir photography and discover some fabulous boudoir tips to make your experience unforgettable!

What is Boudoir Photography Anyway?

Boudoir photography is all about capturing intimate, elegant, and empowering portraits. It’s a chance to celebrate your unique beauty, whether you’re feeling bold, playful, or simply want to embrace your natural self. Think soft lighting, flattering poses, and a vibe that’s both classy and fun!

Boudoir is a genre which is not that well know in New Zealand but is very popular in parts of the U.S.A. and Australia which is where a lot of my clients and referrals come from. Most kiwi's even struggle to pronounce it (boo-dwa). It is a french term and refers to a woman's private bedroom or dressing room.

You don’t have to be a model or have a perfect body to enjoy boudoir photography. In fact, it’s for every woman who wants to feel amazing in her own skin. It’s about YOU - your story, your confidence, your glow.

Imagine stepping into a studio where the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The photographer guides you verbally without any touching, making sure you feel comfortable and radiant. That’s the magic of boudoir!

Top Tips to Prepare for Your Auckland Boudoir Session

Getting ready for your boudoir shoot can be just as exciting as the shoot itself! Here are some practical tips to help you shine:

  1. Choose Outfits That Make You Feel Fabulous

Pick (or even better, BUY!!) lingerie or clothing that you love and feel confident in. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive - comfort and style go hand in hand. Maybe a silky robe, a favourite bra, or even a simple white shirt (your own or your partners) can do wonders!

  2. Hydrate and Rest Well

Your skin will thank you! Drink plenty of water and get a good night’s sleep before your session. It helps your skin glow and keeps you feeling fresh.

  3. Bring Personal Touches

Maybe a piece of jewellery, a scarf, your favourite piece of sports equipment or musical instrument maybe (no pianos though unfortunately!!) or a special perfume etc. These little things add personality and make your photos uniquely yours.

  4. Practice Poses at Home

Stand in front of a mirror and try some poses. Smile, tilt your head, or play with your hair. It’s fun and helps you feel more relaxed during the shoot.

  5. Communicate with Your Photographer

Don’t be shy! Share your ideas, insecurities, or favourite angles. A good photographer will listen and tailor the session to your comfort and style and lrt you review images as the shoot progresses. A photographer who does not show you the images captured is probably not confident about their work.

How to Choose "Your" Perfect Boudoir Photographer in NZ

Finding the right boudoir photographer can make all the difference. Here’s how to pick someone who will make your boudoir experience amazing:

  • Look at Their Portfolio

Check out their previous work. Do their photos make you feel inspired? Do they capture a style that resonates with you?

  • Do They Have A Website?

For some a dedicated website is seen as essential for a serious business while not so important for others. Some see a lack of website as lazy or lack of caring. Does their portfolio look lazy or uncaring? Is the use of light or the posing sub par or unflattering?

  • Read Reviews and Testimonials

Hearing from other women who’ve had sessions with them can give you confidence. Not only listen for good positive referrals but also listen out for the photographers to avoid!! Personal referrals might be a better option than a multitude of fabricated and "bought" online reviews.

  • Is This Their Side Hustle?

Photography for some is nothing more than a hobby or a side hustle which is fine, but just be sure that your shoot experience is not going to be compromised by other distractions and priorities in your photographers life.

  • Meet or Chat Before Booking

A quick call or meeting helps you get a feel for their personality and professionalism. You want someone who listens and makes you feel at ease.

  • Discuss Privacy and Usage

Make sure you’re comfortable with how your photos will be used or shared. Some photographers want to make it all about them and share your images everywhere possible. They might even ask you to sign a contract signing your rights and privacy away!! What works for you?

Choosing the right photographer can be difficult . Take your time and trust your instincts! I have had numerous clients tell me they have already wasted their money somewhere else with lack of communication, unprofessional or unusable images or worse still, no images delivered at all.

What to Expect During Your Boudoir Session

Wondering what actually happens during a boudoir shoot? Here’s a sneak peek:

  • Warm Welcome and Chat

You’ll start with a friendly conversation to discuss your vision, comfort levels, and any questions.

  • Outfit Changes and Styling

You can bring multiple outfits and change during the session. The photographer might help with styling and posing tips.

  • Relaxed and Fun Atmosphere

The session is designed to be enjoyable! You’ll laugh, move, and express yourself naturally.

  • Guided Posing

Don’t worry if you’re not a pro. The photographer (hopefully) will guide you step-by-step to find flattering angles. Just be aware some photographers have "hands on" approach while others are expert at verbally directing you. Ask yourself what you are comfortable with.

Embracing Your Confidence Through Boudoir

Boudoir photography is a powerful tool for self-love. It’s about seeing yourself in a new light and celebrating your unique beauty. Many women tell me how transformative the experience is - it’s like a confidence boost that lasts long after the photoshoot.

If you’ve ever doubted your beauty or felt shy about your body, boudoir can change that. It’s a reminder that you deserve to feel amazing, just as you are.
